Biathlon: Quentin Fillon-Maillet back on top of Olympus
He was once again the best. On Friday afternoon, in the magnificent sunshine of theAnterselva Biathlon Arena in Antholz (Italy), Quentin Fillon-Maillet from the Jura once again became the individual Olympic biathlon champion. Four years after his exceptional campaign in China, the Franc-Comtois’ fortnight in Italy is shaping up in the same way.
Winner of the mixed relay last Sunday with his French team mates, this time he dominated the sprint. In a format in which he was the reigning Olympic vice-champion, Quentin Fillon-Maillet simply put on a demonstration of his own. He scored 10/10 against the targets three days after a tricky individual finish with 16/20, and the Grandvallier didn’t give anyone the chance to take first place at the finish.
It has to be said that he showed an exceptional level on cross-country skis throughout his run. Offensive and constantly accelerating,he held off the Norwegians Vetle Sjaastad Christiansen (10/10) and Sturla Holm Lægreid (10/10), who were also medallists, by around fifteen seconds. Emilien Jacquelin came out on top after standing up and shooting an incredible 10/10, but ended up in fourth place… 2 tenths away from his first individual Olympic medal.
Although inevitably disappointed, the Villardien is nevertheless ideally placed ahead of the chase scheduled for late morning on Sunday (11.15).
The day’s top 10 was completed by Sebastian Samuelsson (10/10), Johannes Dale-Skjevdal (8/10), Martin Ponsiluoma (8/10), Johan-Olav Botn (9/10), Eric Perrot (8/10) and Philipp Horn (9/10). Fabien Claude (5/10) finished an anonymous forty-first.
