Cross-country skiing: Ebba Andersson shatters her silver medal
Behind the untouchable Frida Karlsson, Sweden’s Ebba Andersson won her very first Olympic medalin an individual event by taking second place this Saturday in the skiathlon contested on the Tesero track in Val di Fiemme (Italy). It was a real source of satisfaction for the 28-year-old cross-country skier.
“It’s a relief to finally win an individual Olympic medal. Of course, I wish I’d had the strength to compete more with Frida, but she was really strong. So I had nothing left to offer her,” Ebba Andersson told SVT Sport.

But the coveted medal briefly slipped through her fingers. After the official ceremony, during which she received her silver medal, Ebba Andersson ran around the stadium to celebrate with her compatriot Frida Karlsson. It was then that the necklace snapped, allowing the precious metal to fall into the snow.
Ebba Andersson told Sportbladet about the event: “Frida suggested we go into the stands to talk to the families. So I turned my back to her and, just then, the medal came off. There are still pieces of it lying in the snow. I’ve already given it away. I hope that the organiser will be able to repair it […] Given the result, perhaps it wasn’t worth the rush. But let’s hope they’ve come up with an alternative solution for the broken medals.

Frida Karlsson ‘s medal remained intact thanks to a perfect strategy: “I held it like this when I was running. I had a tactic,” explained the Swede as she firmly clutched the gold medal around her neck.
