Biathlon: Sivert Guttorm Bakken is buried in Lillehammer
On Tuesday, the Nordre Ål church in Lillehammer (Norway) hosted the funeral of Norwegian biathlete Sivert Guttorm Bakken, three weeks after his sudden death in Italy.
“It was an incredibly dignified tribute, but the beautiful and the sad often go hand in hand. It was extremely sad, but there were also a lot of beautiful words that described Sivert [Guttorm Bakken] as he was,” Vetle Sjaastad Christiansen told the Norwegian media, as reported by TV2.

It was magnificently beautiful,” added Per Arne Botnan, Norway’s biathlon boss. A memorable ceremony for Sivert [Guttorm Bakken]. It’s only a temporary farewell. There are many beautiful memories of Sivert [Guttorm Bakken] that will stay with us for a long time to come.
“Sivert [Guttorm Bakken] will live on in our hearts”.
Sturla Holm Lægreid, who was also present before setting off for Ruhpolding (Germany) in the evening, said it was “sad to go to a funeral”.
But it’s also comforting to remember Sivert [Guttorm Bakken] and say goodbye to him,” he adds. He’ll be with us all season and right up to the Olympics. I’m not very religious, but I now understand what is meant by living through others. Sivert [Guttorm Bakken] will live on in our hearts.

He was a totally unique person,” says Emilie Nordskar, acting secretary general of the Norwegian Biathlon Association. He had an exceptional combination of commitment and dedication, as well as a great sense of calm and security around him. The expression ‘hel ved’ (someone of deep authenticity and integrity) has been used many times, and it suited him perfectly.”
