Biathlon: Franziska Preuss, the thirty-second biathlete to win the overall World Cup title
This Sunday, following the mass-start of the finals in Oslo-Holmenkollen (Norway), 31-year-old German Franziska Preuss secured the big crystal globe as overall winner of the biathlon World Cup. This success means that the athlete from Ruhpolding (Germany), who was world champion in the pursuit last month, joins a host of legends of her sport who have been crowned in the past.

In the history of biathlon, it was Norway’s Gry Oestvik, at the end of the 1982/1983 season, who was the first to add her name to the list of winners of the World Cup, then known as the European Cup. Since then, thirty-one other biathletes, including France’s Julia Simon (2023), Sandrine Bailly (2005), Emmanuelle Claret (1996) and Anne Briand (1995), have won the overall classification.
Big names join the list of winners
They include several of the great ladies of biathlon: Norway’s Marte Olsbu Roeiseland (2022), Tiril Eckhoff (2021), Tora Berger (2013, 2014) and Liv Grete Poirée Skjelbreid (2004), Sweden’s Magdalena Forsberg (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002), Eva Korpela (1986, 1987) and Helena Ekholm (2009), Finland’s Kaisa Mäkäräinen (2011, 2014, 2018), Russia’s Anfisa Reztsova (1992, 1993), Italy’s Dorothea Wierer (2019, 2020) and Lisa Vittozzi (2024), the Czech Republic’s Gabriela Soukalova (2016) and Belarus’ Darya Domracheva (2015).

And then, of course, Franziska Preuss joins five German women, winners of seven globes since 2003: Martina Glagow (2003), Kati Wilhelm (2006), Andrea Henkel (2007), Magdalena Neuner (2008, 2010, 2012) and Laura Dahlmeier (2017).
