Biathlon: Isak Frey will be in Oberhof
On Monday 22 December, theNorwegian Biathlon Association announced its selection for the World Cup in Oberhof (Germany). That same day, we learned that the blue bib of Isak Frey, who performed less well than six of his compatriots, had been relegated to the IBU Cup.
The following day, the news of Sivert Guttorm Bakken‘s tragic death, which was due to take place in Thuringia next week, was announced. Speaking to NRK, Norwegian biathlon boss Per Arne Botnan recently announced that Isak Frey would be taking his late team-mate’s place.

I thought for a long time about whether I should take Sivert’s [Guttorm Bakken] place or not, and I came to the conclusion that the best way to pay tribute to him is to race in Oberhof,” explains the young Norwegian biathlete. If there’s anyone who would have wanted this place to be used, it’s Sivert [Guttorm Bakken]. He loved biathlon, top-level sport and professionalism. The best thing we can do is to keep these values alive and pay tribute to him at the same time.
He’s taking a place that was, in a way, Sivert’s [Guttorm Bakken], but I hope it will be an honour to race with his number,” continues Per Arne Bornan. Sivert [Guttorm Bakken] is probably the one who would least have wanted this place to remain vacant.
