Biathlon: Vetle Sjaastad Christiansen as Swiss replacement
“There’s nothing more pointless than doing top-level sport if you can’t compete in the events you want to take part in”. It was with these words that Vetle Sjaastad Christiansen began his interview with TV2. The Norwegian will be in Lenzerheide (Switzerland), but he may not take part in any of the races at this year’s biathlon world championships.

This year, the great Scandinavian is taking part in the world competitions as a substitute . It’s a difficult period that the experienced 32-year-old biathlete is going through, for the vast majority of the time, on his own. It’s fantastic to be out in nature, training and travelling,” he recalls. But there’s something inside me that’s crying out to be on the shooting range fighting.
It has to be said that the native of Geilo (Norway) has had an up-and-down season. Relegated to the IBU Cup at the European Championships, he has yet to make a major impact on the World Cup circuit. However, his staff have decided to take him to the canton of Grisons for a possible participation in the men’s relay.

Beaten by the Swedes last winter in Nove Mesto (Czech Republic) on this event so dear to their hearts, the Norwegians are hungry for revenge. Vetle Sjaastad Christiansen and his team-mates missed out on victory on the main circuit, where France stood out with four wins from as many races contested, and are keen to get back to the front of the stage.

“Physically, I’m ready to perform like I always have. I just want us to field the best possible team to beat France. If that’s with me, it’ll be perfect. If it’s not, then there’s someone better than me,” he admits. I just want Norway to beat France.
