Biathlon: a welcome fourth place for Dorothea Wierer
Italian biathlete Dorothea Wierer has not stood on an individual World Cup podium since… 12 March 2023. On that day, in Östersund (Sweden), she won the mass start ahead of France’s Lou Jeanmonnot and Julia Simon. At the time, for the record, Marte Olsbu Roeiseland, Denise Herrmann-Wick, Mari Eder and Anaïs Chevalier-Bouchet were still on the circuit.
This Sunday, during the mass-start in Ruhpolding (Germany), the transalpine diva was not far from acknowledging this joy. Dorothea Wierer was in contention for the podium in the last lap, but ultimately had to concede defeat to Franziska Preuss and Jeanne Richard.

“I’m not what I used to be, even though I’ve never been a sprinter, she told Fondo Italia. But it doesn’t matter, I’m happy because being at the front is a good sign and I’m also happy with my shooting [she scored 19/20, editor’s note].”
Home next week
During the race, Dorothea Wierer explained that she didn’t think “too much” about this possible return to the podium. “I just tried to concentrate on what I had to do,” she explains.

The Italian also took advantage of her time in the mixed zone to congratulate Tommaso Giacomel, her compatriot who won the men’s mass-start earlier in the day. “I was still in bed this morning and I followed the race from there. I’m really happy, not just for him but for the whole team, we needed a win and a result like this.”
Next week, the team will be playing at home in Antholz (Italy).
