Biathlon: A recovery that takes time
Last autumn, during a training camp with the national team, Hanna Oeberg injured her knee. A slight setback for the biathlete who was still able to participate in the biathlon season. However, the results did not necessarily meet the Swede’s expectations with only one individual podium and a twelfth place in the overall standings.
The performances are explained by a constant discomfort in her joint. Nearly a year later, the pain is still present, especially during running sessions, which delays Hanna Oeberg in her preparation. “I am not yet 100% physically. Since my injury, I have had difficulty running, especially over long periods. We are working on it step by step, and I hope I can run long distances again because I love it,” the biathlete tells Expressen.
A Complete Technical Overhaul
If running remains delicate, her knee also caused her pain on the skis even though the situation is starting to improve: “The most important thing is that I can ski. There is a big difference from the beginning of the year.” The signs are positive for her who had to adapt technically to this physical failure: “When you are in pain, it is easy to change technique, but it is not beneficial at all. Neither for the injury nor for the speed, I have worked a lot to progress. The technique is very important, if you ski badly, you are more likely to worsen the injury.”
However, the native of Kiruna (Sweden) has also modified two aspects of her shooting to increase her success rate against targets. In addition to reviewing her prone shooting, she removed one of the hooks at the back of her rifle. These modifications paid off during the summer season with a national title at the summer championships and a podium in the mixed relay at the Blink Festival.
Even though an illness interrupted her at the end of August, Hanna Oeberg intends to rely on this summer’s preparation to start her season at full speed: “I am serene and calm, it’s always challenging to start a new season, but I think everything will be fine.”
