Biathlon: Sondre Slettemark discovered the senior world championships
On Wednesday, more than 8 minutes behind French winner Eric Perrot, Greenland’s Sondre Slettemark took 69th place in the individual men’s race at the biathlon world championships in Lenzerheide (Switzerland). For the 20-year-old athlete, who recently finished runner-up in the European junior mass-start 60, this was his very first start at the senior World Championships.

However, he was approaching the event on the back of illness, five days after having to give up the sprint. “My form wasn’t what I wanted, and that didn’t help me in this very long race, he told Nordic Magazine. Apart from that, I’m pleased to have remained consistent with an 85% success rate in shooting [he scored 17/20, editor’s note].”

As a result, Sondre Slettemark finished in 69th place… just two places behind Emilien Jacquelin and ahead of biathletes such as Lukas Hofer, Lovro Planko, Vytautas Strolia and Dmitrii Shamaev.
“Despite everything, I’m very proud, he says. It’s a shame I couldn’t do better, but it’s still great to bring the Greenlandic flag to the world championships.”
On Thursday, he will still be competing in the mixed single relay alongside his big sister Ukaleq Slettemark. “We’ve been looking forward to this race for a long time and, even if we’re both not in perfect shape, I think we can do well if we concentrate on shooting, he says. I suppose the aim will be to reach the finish line.”
In December 2023, when they took part in the mixed singles relay at the World Cup in Östersund (Sweden), the Slettemark family were caught out. “I think that without the penalty ring last time, it should be possible to reach the finish,” he hopes.
