Biathlon: Sweden’s first without a medal since the 2020 world championships in Antholz
The men’s mass-start concluded the biathlon world championships in Lenzerheide (Switzerland) on Sunday. This eventful mass-start was the last chance for the Swedish men’s team to win a medal after Saturday’s disappointing fourth-place finish in the relay.
Sebastian Samuelsson‘s hopes of a medal were dashed by two faults in the first standing shot. But for Jesper Nelin and Martin Ponsiluoma, all hope was still possible. In fact, the two men were in a group of six to fight it out for the title in the last shot, along with Norwegians Endre Stroemsheim and Sturla Holm Lægreid, Italian Lukas Hofer and Finn Tero Seppälä.
However, the two Swedes dropped two balls and with them all their medal hopes: “We had a chance to win a medal and we didn’t take it. It’s a good race, but it’s difficult in the end. Ponsi [Martin Ponsiluoma, editor’s note] made one mistake too many. It’s a shame, “ lamented Johannes Lukas, the Swedish team coach, to SVT sport.
Jesper Nelin explained his latest shot toAftonbladet: “I felt good and calm during the shot. Now I’m shooting more slowly and I lose my concentration when the others move away. It’s a disaster”, he lamented. The Swede finished in tenth place, his best result at a World Championship.
Martin Ponsiluoma, one of the great animators of the race, set the second fastest ski time of the race, but with four faults, it was too difficult to get on the podium. He left the stadium in tenth position, but finished strongly and climbed back up to fifth place.
These were disappointing results for the Swedes, as Sébastian Samuelsson, twelfth in the mass-start, conceded. I’ve got 13 medals from these championships, so if I’m not fighting for medals, it’s obviously a shame,” he concedes. Of course, I’m disappointed not to be closer. The Swedish men’s team therefore left Switzerland empty-handed. A first since the world championships in Antholz (Italy) in 2020.
