Biathlon: Tommaso Giacomel, the tenth Italian to win in the World Cup
Since the start of the 2024/2025 men’s biathlon World Cup season , only Norwegians and Frenchmen have won individually. Endre Stroemsheim, Emilien Jacquelin, Eric Perrot, Johannes Thingnes Boe, Martin Uldal, Tarjei Boe, Quentin Fillon-Maillet, Sturla Holm Lægreid and Vebjoern Soerum all stood on the top step of the podium.
This Sunday, in the mass-start at Rupholding (Germany), the twelfth race of the winter, this Franco-Norwegian hegemony came to an end with the victory of Tommaso Giacomel. The Italian, who until then had been no better than ninth this season, rode an immense race.

At 20/20, he even had the luxury of breaking Johannes Thingnes Boe on the last shot to secure victory, which was then definitively sealed in the final cross-country loop. “It’s insane! I really don’t have any words, it’s a very difficult time for our whole team. Today I’m showing the work of everyone, of this incredible team where everyone works very hard. I’m very proud of all the work that’s been done by everyone this year. It’s a very important result for our whole team,” he reacted, very moved, to the IBU microphone after his victory.
Tommaso Giacomel thus becomes the tenth Italian biathlete to win the Biathlon World Cup, the first since his team-mate Lukas Hofer in March 2021.
