Biathlon: a final medal-less day for Les Bleus, Norway make it a hat-trick
At 4.05pm on Sunday, all eyes were on the Roland Arena in Lenzerheide (Switzerland). At the start of the twelfth and final race of the 2025 Biathlon World Championships, the men’s mass-start, there was a lot at stake: the last bibs worn by Johannes Thingnes Boe and Tarjei Boe at the World Championships, the quest for a medal record for France and the desire to complete the grand slam for the same French team.
Eric Perrot, Fabien Claude, Quentin Fillon-Maillet and Emilien Jacquelin were all on target for Les Bleus in this race for kings. Only they didn’t reach their destination. So, for the first time this fortnight, France failed to reach the podium and the medal count remained stuck at thirteen, equalling the Nove Mesto 2024 record.
Although Emilien Jacquelin (17/20), from Dauphiné, made an appearance at the head of the race after the second dismount following his exclusion from the relay, he then fell apart both in the shooting and on the track to finish in eleventh place. Up front, it was the Norwegians who shared the medals.
Johannes Thingnes Boe with a tan for his final World Championship appearance
Sturla Holm Lægreid (18/20) and Endre Stroemsheim (19/20) came out of the last run on the mats together, battling it out for the title on the snow-covered ribbon in Lenzerheide. In the end, it was the latter, less experienced, who took the upper hand in the final hectometres to win his first individual gold medal at the world championships.
Sturla Holm Lægreid, for his part, saw Johannes Thingnes Boe (16/20) come back at him with a vengeance and it was in the sprint that second place was decided. The faster Lægreid crossed the line first and Boe took bronze in his last World Championship bib.
Behind them, the flower ceremony was completed by American Campbell Wright (18/20), Sweden’s Martin Ponsiluoma (16/20) and Italy’s Tommaso Giacomel (16/20).
The first Frenchman was Eric Perrot (17/20) in seventh place. Fabien Claude (15/20) was fifteenth and Quentin Fillon-Maillet (14/20) nineteenth.
