Biathlon: no biathlete has yet achieved a hat-trick at the world championships
At midday on Sunday, Julia Simon, as she did on Friday in the sprint, will be easily recognisable in the pursuit at the World Biathlon Championships in Lenzerheide (Switzerland). The Beaufort native will indeed have the honour of wearing the sublimely prestigious gold bib.
If that’s the case, it’s simply because the biathlete from Villard-sur-Doron (Savoie) is the title holder. A year ago, in Nove Mesto (Czech Republic), she put on a show to win the supreme solo title. Above all, Julia Simon also won the gold medal in the pursuit in February 2023 in the mist of Oberhof (Germany).
35 seconds of delay to clear
In short, the customs officer from Beaufortain is the current queen of the speciality… and she could well make even more history this Sunday in Switzerland. If she were to win, Julia Simon would become the first biathlete in the history of the World Championships to win three consecutive world titles in all individual formats.
To do that, the Frenchwoman will have to close the gap on Justine Braisaz-Bouchet, the new world sprint champion. At the gun, 35 seconds and seven places will separate the two athletes.
In other words, anything is possible for Julia Simon, who is adept at making fantastic comebacks. To win her first crown two years ago, she shaved 1 minute and 3 seconds off her time.
