Biathlon: silver for Les Bleus in the relay
The French team had yet to win a silver medal since the start of its Swiss harvest at the World Biathlon Championships in Lenzerheide (Switzerland). With six gold medals and five bronze medals, they entered the men’s relay, which started at 3.05pm, in the guise of favourites.
Having won all four of their World Cup races since the start of the winter, Les Bleus were aiming for gold to crown this unthinkable achievement in world title format. Unfortunately, the plan did not unfold as hoped.
Whereas France, with their successes in previous weeks, took off as soon as the race got underway, this time it was Norway who got the race off to a flying start. Endre Stroemsheim, the kingdom’s pitcher responsible for putting the Scandinavian stars into orbit, took his role to heart to open up a gap of 12 sec 1 over Emilien Claude. For his first time at the World Championships, the man from the Vosges didn’t disappoint… but he was no match for the Norwegian.
The Norwegians were untouchable
In the end, this observation was valid for the whole race. At the halfway stage, after the passages of Tarjei Boe and Fabien Claude, 25 sec 9 separated the two nations. This gap increased to 42.4 seconds one relay from the end after the runs by Sturla Holm Lægreid and Eric Perrot.
In the end, it was a long-distance duel between Johannes Thingnes Boe and Quentin Fillon-Maillet at the very end of the relay. The Norwegian was imperious, missing no target and offering his country an eleventh world title in the speciality. For him, it was also his twenty-third world crown.
Les Bleus had to be content with a silver medal, the first won by the French delegation in the canton of Grisons. It was a podium finish that the French took with a smile. It wasthe Germans Philipp Nawrath, Danilo Riethmueller, Johannes Kuehn and Philipp Horn who came out on top, ahead of holders Sweden and Italy.
