Biathlon: a European junior medal for Greenland
After shining at the Junior Biathlon Cup in Jakuszyce (Poland), 20-year-old Greenlander Sondre Slettemark went into the European Junior Championships in Altenberg (Germany) with confidence. However, he missed out on the opening individual event, finishing in thirty-third place because of a poor 13/20 in the shooting.
Eighth in the sprint on Saturday, he managed to build up his power… until he was fighting for victory on Sunday morning in the mass-start 60. Offensive and at the front of the race, he was finally beaten by Grzegorz Galica on the final lap. Even so, his silver medal is a historic one for his country.

“It’s really great to be able to stand on the podium of an international championship with the Greenland flag. It’s certainly one of my greatest achievements,” he told Nordic Magazine.
He feared the return of Martin Botet, who had a tan, on the final lap.
Overall, the native of Nuuk (Greenland) felt he had “a very good race”. ” An 18/20 and the second best time on skis is something I’ll be taking with me for the rest of the season,” he continued, as he will be competing in the IBU Cup at the start of February.

In the final lap, however, Sondre Slettemark was challenged by Frenchman Martin Botet, who was tanned at the finish. He’s a very strong competitor and I was really worried that he would catch me on the last lap,” he says. But when I got to the top of the climbs and saw that he still hadn’t come back, I knew I’d take the money because I was fast on the descents.
