Biathlon: no medal for Les Bleues in the Östersund youth relay
Now that the individual events at the World Youth and Junior Biathlon Championships in Östersund (Sweden) are over, it’s time for the relays to round off the event. Late on Tuesday morning, the women’s U19s were on deck.
France, with the trio of Alice Dusserre, Coralie Perrin and Louise Roguet, had a strong chance of winning the gold medal for the sixth time after 2004, 2005, 2007, 2014 and 2021. But the race quickly became difficult for the French.
With a total of 2 penalty laps and 12 picks, and a travel speed far from the best times, the French team was unable to compete. Out of the running for the medals early on in the race, the Tricolores finished ninth at the finish line. Understandably disappointed, they watched from afar as the leading nations battled it out for the medals.
It was the German team of Melina Gaupp, Lena Siegmund and Sydney Wuestling who came out on top. Fourteenth after the first shot, and after a penalty round, the Germans made a fantastic comeback to take the lead after three shots.
It was then in the solo event that they became world youth champions in the relay for the third time after 2008 and 2023. Norway(Sara Tronrud, Bjoerg Eide, Martine Skog) took silver and Italy(Nayeli Mariotti Cavagnet, Gaia Gondolo, Carlotta Gautero) bronze.
Ukraine, second after the first shot, had to be content with fourth place, ahead of Sweden, Finland, Poland and Slovenia. Behind France, in ninth place, Switzerland rounded out the top 10.
