Biathlon: Too many shooting errors for Lena Haecki-Gross
Last Saturday, on the Pâquier in Annecy (Haute-Savoie), Lena Haecki-Gross quickly found herself at the back of the pack in the biathlon mass start she was participating in. Struggling in her first shooting round where she accumulated five mistakes, the Swiss athlete never really managed to make up her deficit under the Annecy heat.
“The race was a bit difficult for me. There wasn’t much time to warm up, so I struggled with the roller skis during the first lap, and it wasn’t any better for my first shot,” she tells Nordic Magazine. “I felt better and better as the race went on, but when you start from so far back, there’s not much you can do.”
“The atmosphere is crazy here” Lena Haecki-Gross to Nordic Magazine
Indeed, even though the twenty-nine-year-old biathlete made only one mistake in the next three shootings, the gap with the lead did not decrease. It was an opportunity for her to enjoy the French crowd that never stopped cheering her on both in the stands and by the lake: “The atmosphere is crazy here, even when you are in last place, the crowd encourages you and gives you strength to finish, especially when you’re not having your best race,” she said joyfully.
Despite this race to forget, Lena Haecki-Gross knows that winter is not here yet and that every week of her preparation will allow her to set things right. “The next big event for me will probably be in November with the national team,” she explains. “But until then, there is still a lot to do, so I will go back to training to continue preparing.”
