Biathlon: a small crystal globe for Sondre Slettemark
This season, Greenland’s Sondre Slettemark continues to achieve historic feats for his country. Winner of the Junior Cup and silver medallist at the Junior World Championships, the 20-year-old biathlete then went on to take part in the Senior World Championships in Lenzerheide (Switzerland).
In the canton of Grisons, he enabled Greenland to take the start of its first mixed singles relay in the competition alongside his big sister Ukaleq Slettemark.
On Monday, Sondre Slettemark made history once again by lifting the Junior Cup small globe in the mass start in Östersund (Sweden). However, the native of Nuuk (Greenland) did not take part in the race.
“I went into these championships coming off two weeks of illness and just managed to start the sprint. I was so unwell that I didn’t even manage to qualify for the mass start, which was really the only reason I raced,” he tells Nordic Magazine.
“I won this globe without even racing”.
Although he had a clear lead over Croatia’s Matija Legovic before this event, his destiny was no longer in his own hands.
Fortunately for me, he finished [seventh], outside the top 4, so I won the globe without even racing,” he says. Even though [Matija Legovic] is my friend and I want him to succeed, I can’t say I wasn’t happy when I saw he’d made two mistakes on his last shot!”
Although his last world junior championships were trying, Sondre Slettemark leaves Sweden with a smile on his face. “ I’m very happy to at least be able to take this globe home with me,” he says.
For Greenland, once again, this is a historic first: “With a feat like this, I hope to inspire the younger generation of athletes we have [in this competition],” he concludes.
