Biathlon: Rémi Broutier heads for the Savoie committee
Just over a fortnight ago, the final blow fell for Bauju’s Rémi Broutier: after four years in a row with the French Ski Federation (FFS) training groups, he lost his place.
“He’s about to turn 25 [he turned 25 on 9 May] and he’s been stagnant for two or three seasons. We prefer to bring in new blood, but he knows he’ll be back if he has to come back, commented Stéphane Bouthiaux, the head of the French biathlon, in our columns at the time. He’s not where he should be at the age he is, bearing in mind that he’s a year older than Eric Perrot!”

This non-selection came as no surprise to the Bauges Ski Nordique biathlete. “I was expecting it in view of my results and, above all, with the change in categories [juniors now stop at U21, editor’s note],” he tells Nordic Magazine.
Coached by Franck Perrot as part of a high-performance group
Rémi Broutier, European bronze medallist in the relay last January, admits that he has been asking himself “quite a few questions” about the next steps in his career, but he has finally decided to get back to work.
“I wasn’t at all sure that I would continue, but I don’t feel that I had a complete season last year because I injured my shoulder a month before the start of the season, and my upper body was immobilised, he explains. So I’m still frustrated and I don’t want to dwell on that. I’m off again for a season that I hope will be 100%! The aim is to go all out and have no regrets for next year.”

To get back on track, the Savoyard had several options on the table, including signing with Team ENB based in Bessans (Savoie). However, he opted to return to the Savoie ski committee and join Franck Perrot’s highly successful Equipe Savoie Nordique team.
“It was the most obvious choice,” says Rémi Broutier, while Ian Martinet and Nathanaël Peaquin will be some of his new team-mates in a group of eleven biathletes (five men, six women). For Broutier, the aim will be the same as before: to move up quickly in the IBU Cup and then set his sights on the World Cup.
