Biathlon: Annecy also withdraws from the Grand-Bornand World Cup
Ever since it first appeared on the biathlon World Cup calendar, the stage held at the Sylvie-Becaert stadium in Le Grand-Bornand (Haute-Savoie) has been organised with the support of the town of Annecy (Haute-Savoie). In fact, as will be the case again this year from 19 to 22 December, the name of the Haute-Savoie municipality will officially appear alongside that of the Aravis village.
But those days are over. A few days after Annecy officially withdrew from the Martin Fourcade Nordic Festival, François Astorg, the town’s mayor, announced this Saturday morning in the columns of Libération that he was withdrawing his support for the highly popular biathlon world cup for the period 2026-2030.
In practical terms, this withdrawal, he explains, concerns “funding of 100,000 euros, promotion of the event and logistical and human support”.

To explain this decision, the ecologist mayor cites “concerns”: “On the question of the climate in mid-mountain resorts, everyone agrees that we can no longer do things the way they used to be done”, he says.
3Le Grand-Bornand understood this a long time ago and is developing other events that are not just linked to snow, such as the Biathlon World Cup, but a new sustainable model has yet to be found, he continues. Adapting the mountains to global warming can’t wait any longer.”
