Biathlon: back to school for Benedikt Doll
At the end of last winter, after winning two Olympic medals, six world championships and eight World Cup titles, 34-year-old German Benedikt Doll called time on his biathlon career.
Although he had already explained that he did not want to switch to coaching, the 2017 world sprint champion had indicated that he was attracted by the renewable energy sector. In the podcast Das Biathlon-Doppelzimmer by Arnd Peiffer and Erik Lesser, he recently announced that he was embarking on an apprenticeship that would last two and a half years.
“In May, I did a work placement in an engineering office specialising in technical building equipment in Fribourg. It was very interesting, and I realised that this was the direction I wanted to go in professionally,” he explains in comments quoted by Sport.de. After a few weeks’ consideration, Benedikt Doll returned to the company to apply for an apprenticeship contract, which was of course accepted.
“I was already interested in electrical engineering and the intelligent home during my career. I’ve always been passionate about this profession,” he explains. During his weeks on the course, the German shares his classroom with other students aged between 16 and 22. “It’s a bit special and different from my life as a 34-year-old father,” laughs Benedikt Doll, who also says he has no regrets about ending his life as a biathlete last March.
