Biathlon: an unusual first training camp for the Swedish national team
As has often been the case in recent years, theSwedish national biathlon team kicks off its summer preparations in mid-May. This Saturday, the men’s and women’s teams set off for Crete, a Greek island in the Mediterranean Sea.

It’s a popular destination for tourists, and one that doesn’t immediately spring to mind when you think of sports training. And yet this is not the first time that the Scandinavian staff have opted for this territory of more than 620,000 inhabitants. In fact, in 2022/2023, the Swedish biathletes began their preparations with a training camp on this very site.
A total of thirteen players will be travelling to Greece from 10 to 17 May. They include Anna Magnusson, Anna-Karin Heijdenberg, Ella Halvarsson, Elvira Oeberg, Hanna Oeberg, Johanna Skottheim, Linn Gestblom, Sara Andersson, Malte Stefansson, Sebastian Samuelsson, Martin Ponsiluoma, Viktor Brandt and Jesper Nelin.

“We already know that this is a place that works very well for us. It’s a well-known environment where we have access to everything we need to get the season off to a good start,” explained head coach Johannes Lukas in a statement. Being able to come here and focus fully on training gives us an important starting point for what lies ahead this season.”

And while the week will be dictated by cycling, skiing and running sessions, it will also be an opportunity for Sweden to organise meetings with specialists and exchange experiences with a view to the Olympic Games in Milan/Cortina (Italy) scheduled for next February.
