Biathlon: Switzerland still within touching distance of the podium on home soil
The Swiss team continues to hover around its first medal of the World Biathlon Championships. On Thursday, at home in the mixed singles relay in Lenzerheide (Switzerland), dominated by theFrench team of Julia Simon and Quentin Fillon-Maillet, the Nati placed at the foot of the podium, just four seconds behind Germany.

“Fourth place is still a good result. We really wanted to get a medal after all the good work we’ve done recently. When you see what the others did today, you think it was possible,” Amy Baserga told Eurosport at the finish. But it’s biathlon, and I think we can be very proud of everything we’ve done here this week.
The Swiss duo of Amy Baserga and Niklas Hartweg had an eventful race. The Swiss rider was the first to start before handing over in eleventh position, twenty-three seconds behind the race leader.

It was then Niklas Hartweg‘s turn, fifth in the individual the day before. He turned things around with a superb 10/10 behind the rifle. Halfway through the race, he handed over the relay in first position in front of a wildly enthusiastic crowd. Amy Baserga, in this very fast format, then took over the baton.
“I was so nervous. I had to pull perfectly. I saw Niklas on his first stint and he did a very, very good job. I said to myself, come on, stay calm. But this race on this track is so short,” she confides. There are really barely two minutes between runs on the shooting range. I could hear the crowd. I’d never paid attention to that before.

And despite a crazy final lap in which he caught Sebastian Samuelsson, Niklas Hartweg was just one place off the podium. Another chocolate medal that could well turn into a more precious metal over the next few days, as the Swiss will be keen to shine at the end of this fortnight in their own backyard.
