Biathlon: Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold reflects on her failure
Last winter, Norwegian biathlete Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold battled throughout the season for the overall World Cup ranking. Leader of the hierarchy at the time of the world championships and still in yellow with two races to go, the Scandinavian finally cracked at Canmore (Canada), leaving the big globe to her Italian friend Lisa Vittozzi.
“It was the best season of my career, she admitted to the IBU website. When you’re in the middle of such intense momentum, you don’t have time to appreciate and recognise what you’ve done. When I found the time to reflect, I realised that I’d had a lot of good races, that I’d improved enormously and that I’d come close to winning the overall.”
Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold lost out by just a few points, and on the stroke of the gong, ending her season in third place in the world. “I’ve learnt that things change almost every day in biathlon. One day, you’re sure you’ve cracked the code. The next day, the door is locked again, she says. So over the summer, I devoted a lot of time to physical and technical preparation, as well as finding ways of coping with good days and bad.”
After this bad experience, the Norwegian now understands what Lisa Vittozzi went through five years ago, when the Italian also lost the gros globe at the end of the suspense. “You learn twice as much from a painful experience – like losing the overall World Cup title in the last week of the season – as from a good one, says Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold. I hope I’ll be better prepared if the opportunity to win this big globe arises again. It’s something that’s hard to create or recreate.”
