15:16. A new chapter in theenmity between Russian cross-country skiers Alexander Bolshunov and Alexander Bakurov. The Russian Ski Federation (FLGR) announced on Tuesday 2 December that it was suspending Bolshunov from national competitions. The only ones in which he can take part because of his country’s suspension by the FIS.
This decision follows the altercation he had with his compatriot on Saturday 29 November. During the Russian Cup sprint in Kirovsk, the two collided in the semi-final. This resulted in the elimination of Alexander Bolshunov, who fell and finished last in the series. At the finish, as shown on Match TV, he rushed Alexander Bakurov and deliberately shoved him, causing him to fall and injuring him in the process. This behaviour was deemed “unacceptable and contrary to team spirit, the fundamental principles of sporting ethics, as well as the respect and safety of competitors” by the presidium of the Russian federation.
Already disqualified from the event, the three-time Olympic champion has also been suspended until further notice by the FLGR. “The majority of the presidium voted to suspend Alexander Bolshunov until Bakurov returns to the start line. This decision is intended to ensure a balance of interests, to support the injured athlete and to preserve the fairness of the sporting process,” the statement said.
A few hours before this decision, the 28-year-old cross-country skier published a video in which he said he regretted the incident, while accusing his rival of unsporting behaviour and insults, as noted by MatchTV.
