The opening cross-country skiing races in Beitostølen (Norway) got underway on Saturday in bright sunshine with the women’s qualifying round of the classic sprint.
Ane Appelkvist Stenseth was impressive on the 1.3 kilometre loop and dominated the first leg. A clear winner with a margin of more than three seconds over Hedda Oestberg Amundsen at the finish, the Norwegian assumed her status as a specialist in the discipline. Behind the leading duo, Mathilde Myhrvold was third, nearly five seconds behind the leader.
In the French clan, there were no unpleasant surprises for Léna Quintin and Mélissa Gal. The only Frenchwomen entered in this first competition, the two Haut-Savoyard women finished in fifteenth and twentieth place, and will therefore be taking part in the quarter-finals, scheduled to start at 1.30pm.
