The second day of competition at the Cross-Country Skiing World Cup in Cogne (Italy) kicked off on Saturday morning with the qualifying round of the women’s classic sprint. Jasmi Joensuu, who won the previous day’s team sprint with Kerttu Niskanen, was once again on hand.

The big favourite of the day in theabsence of Jonna Sundling and Kristine Stavaas Skistad, the Finn did her job to take first place. On the line, she edged out Norway’s Ane Appelkvist Stenseth by almost a second. Sweden’s Maja Dahlqvist rounded off the top 3 in this first heat.

In the French clan, only Mélissa Gal made it through to the quarter-finals. Thirtieth and the last qualifier of the day, the Haut-Savoyard fought right to the end to secure her ticket for the finals by just one hundredth of a point over Estonia’s Mariel Merlii Pulles. There was a little disappointment for Léna Quintin, eliminated in thirty-seventh place, and Léonie Besson, forty-fourth in her second start in the elite.
