Cross-country skiing : Sabin Coupat very close to the top 3
It was the cross-country skiers in the U20 and senior categories who brought the first day of competition to a close on the first stage of the winter FESA Cup cross-country skiing event. In Schlinig (Italy), it was a sprint skate race for the men on Friday afternoon.
Best Blue in the qualifying round, Sabin Coupat came close to pulling off a coup against the Italian horde. Clearing the rounds one by one, the Forézien found himself in the final against five Italians. The Frenchman was in the mix, but had to be content with fourth place when he crossed the line.
In front of him, Giovanni Ticco confirmed that he was in good form after winning the qualifier, winning in style ahead of his compatriots Martino Carollo and Giacomo Gabrielli.
However, the competition came to an end in the quarter-finals for Sabin Coupat‘s team-mates. Gaspard Rousset, Victor Lovera, Julien Arnaud and Arnaud Chautemps failed to advance to the next round in their respective rounds.
Isai Naeff reigns supreme at U20 level
In the Under-20 category, Switzerland’s Isai Naeff rounded off a perfect day. Alone in the world in the first heat, the young man then went on to win his quarter-final and semi-final to finish the day’s final round in style. In the final, he dominated Germany’s Jakob Elias Moch and Italy’s Marco Pinzani.
Lorin Vergnolle, the only Frenchman to secure his ticket for the finals, was eliminated in the quarter-finals. Sixth in his group, the young Frenchman was no match for his Italian, Slovenian, Spanish and Swiss opponents.
