Cross-country skiing: Jasmi Joensuu does it again
On Saturday, the first cross-country skiing competition of the 2024/2025 winter season took place at the opening of the Finnish Cup. On the snowfarm in Vuokatti (Finland), a sprint skating event was on the programme. Defending champion Jasmi Joensuu of Finland took advantage of Katri Lylynperä’s withdrawal to skate throughout the day.
A big winner in qualifying, she then dominated her quarter-final and semi-final before winning the final by a margin of over 2 seconds over Hilla Niemelä. Amanda Saari was third by more than 3 seconds. On the podium, we find the top 3 from the qualifying round.
On the men’s side, however, Oskari Hökkä, winner of the classification run at the start of the day, lost out in the first round. In the final, it was Eero Rantala who came out on top, beating Ike Melnits by 66 hundredths. Olli Ahonen, winner of this sprint a year ago, completed the podium ahead of Wiljam Mattila, Elmeri Toivanen and Valtteri Pennanen.
