Only tenth in the qualifying round held a few hours earlier, Kristine Stavaas Skistad set the wheels in motion as the final rounds of the sprint skate event at the Norwegian cross-country skiing championships held in Gåsbu (Norway) progressed.

Absent at the start of the winter after undergoing stomach surgery, the Norwegian has only contested one World Cup race so far. Announced as a starter for the classic sprint in Les Rousses (Jura) scheduled for this Saturday, the mysterious Scandinavian has taken her bearings on home soil.

She went from strength to strength throughout the day and won the final in style, beating Helene Marie Fossesholm in particular, who is becoming increasingly comfortable in this format. Elena Rise Johnsen won a fine bronze medal after getting the better of Johanne Hauge Harviken, Julie Myhre and Hanne Wilberg Rofstad, who were second, first and third respectively in the qualifying heat.
