On Sunday night, the men’s 10km freestyle at the Asian Games in Harbin (China) took place on the track at the Yabuli stadium (China).
Two days after reigning supreme in the classic sprint, China’s Qiang Wang failed to repeat the feat and, despite a good first half of the race, had to be content with fifth place. Up front, it was Japan who shone with Haruki Yamashita’s victory.
However, by the final intermediate, with 3.2km to go, he was only third in the standings. Finishing very strongly, the Japanese won the gold medal 10 sec 0 ahead of his compatriot Takatsugu Uda and 13 sec 8 ahead of Kazakh Olzhas Klimin. It was a fine piece of revenge for the man who had been disqualified from the classic sprint final.
