Friday saw the opening of the Swedish cross-country skiing cup in Idre Fjäll (Sweden), with a 20-kilometre individual skate race on the programme. And it was the women who were the first to set off early in the morning.

The race was dominated head and shoulders by Elina Roennlund. Winning by a margin of almost a minute over her compatriot Elin Henriksson, the Swede struck a blow in this first race of the weekend. Behind this leading duo, Karolina Hedenstroem completed the podium just ahead of 44-year-old Japanese rider Masako Ishida.

In the men’s race, Gustaf Berglund was the strongest.Ebba Andersson ‘s boyfriend was able to find the right rhythm to open up a gap on his rivals and nearly 30 seconds ahead of his first chaser, compatriot Axel Werner. In third place, it was Norway’s Sindre Bjoernestad Skar who played a nasty trick on his Scandinavian neighbours.
