Cross-country skiing : “She made a bad choice”, says Paal Golberg
One of the big favourites in the classic sprint of the World Cup in Trondheim (Norway), won by Sweden’s Johanna Hagstroem on Friday, Norway’s Kristine Stavaas Skistad left the race in the quarter-finals.
The winner of the first sprint of the winter in Ruka (Finland) was trapped in the final straight by Finland’s Jasmi Joensuu, who chose the outermost trajectory and forced the Norwegian to finish her effort out of her tracks.
This early exit took everyone by surprise, starting with the Norwegian experts. ” Few people had imagined it “, said Fredrik Aukland, consultant for the Norwegian broadcaster NRK. For NRK commentator Jann Post, the Norwegian ” made a tactical error ” by not positioning herself better against the Finn.
Fredrik Aukland felt that she ” should have shifted to the right to find some space “. Former cross-country skier Paal Golberg was even more emphatic: ” She made the wrong choice, and that was it for her.

Kristine Stavaas Skistad, lucid in the mixed zone, admitted her mistake: “I wasn’t really prepared to be blocked there, so I didn’t pay much attention,” she explained. Then, when asked about Jasmi Joensuu‘s tactics, she declared that “it was probably the only way to beat [her], so it was a good idea”. The Norwegian refuses to be polemical: ” I suppose it was me who wasn’t paying attention. So it’s my fault.
