Cross-country skiing: Jens Burman wins his first world medal
Sweden’s Jens Burman is not having the greatest season of his career. He has just one top 10 finish to his name, with an eighth place on the final stage of the Tour de Ski, at the top of Alpe Cermis.
However, this pillar of the Swedish national team will be taking part in his fifth world championships in Trondheim (Norway). This is his chance to win his first world medal. Despite some disappointing results this winter, he has no intention of making up the numbers. Jens Burman talks to Nordic Magazine.
- How are you feeling a few days before the start of the World Championships in Trondheim (Norway)?
I’m looking forward to it, I’m feeling really good. I hope I can do well at the World Championships. It’s very exciting to compete in Norway. There are always a lot of people there. I think it’s going to be a really incredible World Championships.

- What are your main objectives?
I think the 50 kilometre skate [which will take place on 8 March, editor’s note] is my best chance of a good result. Of course, I can also be strong in the other distance races, but that’s still my best chance.
- How are you preparing for the Worlds?
We’re currently in Bruksvallarna, Sweden. We’ve got superb conditions, it’s a great place to ski and prepare, so it feels good. In the last few days before the World Championships, we’re not doing anything special, we’re just trying to get a good feeling. This little course feels good.
“The feeling is good, but the results haven’t shown what I’m really capable of”.Jens Burman for Nordic Magazine
- Especially as you were already at home last weekend with the Falun World Cup…
It’s great to be at home in the weeks leading up to the Worlds. I feel a bit more relaxed. It was nice to compete in Falun and now I’m still in the country, so it’s really good to be home before such a big goal.

- Unfortunately, you didn’t perform as well as you’d hoped (eighteenth in the individual and thirty-first in the mass-start)…
I was disappointed with my results. The feeling is good, but the results didn’t show my real capabilities. Of course, I’m not satisfied, but I feel strong and in good shape. I just need to bring that condition with me to Trondheim and believe in myself. That’s the most important thing.
