Cross-country skiing: another gold for Gaspard Cottaz
Already crowned French U18 champion on Friday in the skate sprint, Dauphinois Gaspard Cottaz repeated the feat this Sunday morning in the classic 10km mass-start. In this, the last national race of the winter, the member of Ski Nordique Oisans took the lead in the second of three 3.3km laps, in the company of Victor Lafrasse.
It was on the return to the Olympic stadium from the 1992 Games that the Isérois put in an attack that proved fatal for his opponent. Alone in the lead in the final loop, Gaspard Cottaz won easily and by a wide margin to claim a second gold medal as French champion this week.
“It’s been a great end to the season. Everything’s gone as well as I wanted, it’s been nothing but fun! On this race, I felt good from the start,” he told Nordic Magazine afterwards. I did a lap on the skis and then attacked. Victor Lafrasse followed me, and I thought he’d hold on well, so I kept some to put back on, but there was no need and I smoothed out the effort right to the end.
Lilian Jaussaud takes Victor Lafrasse for silver
For second place, Haut-Alpin Lilian Jaussaud, from Club Elite Hautes-Alpes, caught up with Victor Lafrasse in the final kilometres before overtaking him. The Gapençais thus takes the silver medal, while the Bornandin man is tanned.
Mallory Moreau, Timoté Gallin, Paul Rousset Vachon, Pablo Sanchez, Lauric Chapuis, Boris Guillot and Milo Desseux rounded out the top 10.
