Cross-country skiing: the latest rumour about Petter Northug Jr.
A new rumour about Norway’s Petter Northug Jr is gaining momentum in Scandinavia. The 39-year-old cross-country skier is reportedly in talks with Mexico to obtain sporting nationality and take part in the Milan/Cortina 2026 Olympic Games.
The Mexican embassy in Norway has confirmed that a dialogue is underway between the parties. ” He has a positive relationship with Mexico and we are currently discussing a number of things,” Mexican ambassador Omar Fayad told NRK.

“Who wouldn’t want to see Mr Northug return to the world championships, or even take part in the Olympic Games? We will do everything we can to ensure that his experience can help the Mexican athletes who have secured a place at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy,” added the Mexican ambassador.
For his part, Petter Northug Jr also stated that an announcement concerning the Olympic Games would be made during the month of April. “I can’t say anything about the Olympic Games right now. There will be a bit of backstage, so we’ll know more in mid-April. Then we’ll have to decide what direction to take for the new season,” said the Norwegian champion.
Existing links with Mexico
But that’s not all. Linking the Scandinavian to the Mexican team is Allan Corona Rodriguez, a Mexican cross-country skier who has been living in Norway for four years and has qualified for Milan/Cortina 2026. The cross-country skier recently trained alongside Petter Northug Jr on the Oslo-Holmenkollen track (Norway).
“I know it’s an opportunity for the Mexican team,” revealed the Mexican cross-country skier. “But there are some very complex issues, like passports and things like that. If we have time, there will be opportunities.”
He added: “We talked about the possibility of training together in Mexico, probably this summer. We talked about the opportunity and potential of introducing cross-country skiing to our country. Nothing is planned, just a conversation between two people who like to dream.”
Petter Northug Jr had already revealed that a change of nationality was possible in order to take part in the Olympic Games. In November, he stated that Liechtenstein was a possibility. In December, he confirmed that discussions were underway with Austria.
