Friday saw the opening of a new stage of the Scandinavian cross-country skiing cup in Gålå, Norway. The day’s programme included a sprint skate which began with the traditional qualifiers, where the field was particularly strong.

First to enter the fray mid-morning, the ladies have already established an initial hierarchy. And the best of them was Milla Grosberghaugen Andreassen. Triple world champion at the last Junior World Championships in Schilpario (Italy), the Norwegian dominated this first run, winning by a margin of almost a second over her compatriot Maria Hartz Melling. Nora Christine Hansen rounded off the top 3. Also of note wasHeidi Weng, who was eliminated after finishing 33rd.

In the men’s competition, Velte Sjaastad Christiansen created a surprise. The great absentee of the biathlon world cup held in Oslo-Holmenkollen (Norway) this weekend, the Norwegian stood out against his cross-country counterparts. Third at the finish, the solid Scandinavian finished less than two seconds behind the winner Lars Heggen. Filip Skari, who was crowned world junior champion in Italy in February, finished second.
