Cross-country skiing: Alvar Myhlback wins the Vasaloppet
For several years now, Swedish cross-country skier Alvar Myhlback has been regarded as a prodigy. Heralded as the future nugget of the sport, he explained that he wanted to beat the Norwegians on home soil at the World Championships in Trondheim (Norway).
However, he hasn’t got his ticket for the competition and, for the time being, it‘ s with the Lager 157 Ski Team, in the Ski Classics, that he’s showing his prowess. Eighth in the Vasaloppet in 2023 for his first participation at the age of 16, he finished third in March 2024.
This time, on the first Sunday in March, it was Alvar Myhlback, who will be celebrating his nineteenth birthday in a few weeks’ time, who was crowned winner of the Vasaloppet. In a close race in which ten men battled it out in the final pack, he managed to get the better of his team-mate Emil Persson (Lager 157 Ski Team) to win. “I’ve never felt happy in my life, it’s so crazy! I can die with peace of mind,” he told SVT Sport.

Max Novak (Team Aker Dæhlie) rounded off the podium ahead of Johan Tjelle (Team Engcon), Axel Jutterstroem (Team Eksjöhus), Petter Stakston (Team Aker Dæhlie), Torleif Syrstad (Team Engcon), Andreas Nygaard (Team Ragde Charge), Runar Skaug Mathisen (Lager 157 Ski Team) and Johan Hoel (Team Ragde Charge).
The first Frenchman, Jérémy Royer (Team Eksjöhus), was 31st , 8 min 3 behind the winner. Thomas Joly (Team Ramudden), back from injury, was 42nd at 10 min 15, while Simon Vuillet (i3 Ski Team) was 59th at 16 min 3. Bastien Laurent (TNE Coste – Fromageries Marcel Petite), the last Frenchman in the top 100, was 96th.
