The individual skate races of the Finnish cross-country skiing championships were held in Taivalkoski on Friday. And it was the women who got the ball rolling at mid-morning on a short 5-kilometre course.

And in the end, it was the favourite of the day , Kerttu Niskanen, who won. The headliner of her team, the Finn won by 11 seconds over Jasmi Joensuu, winner of the crystal globe in the World Cup sprint. Almost 30 seconds after the winner, Vilma Nissinen completed the top 3.

Then it was the turn of the men to take to the track over a 10-kilometre course. And in this race, Petteri Koivisto created a surprise. The 25-year-old cross-country skier dominated the proceedings to win ahead of his compatriot Miro Karppanen and biathlete Tero Seppälä.
