Cross-country skiing: Malta takes part in a world event for the first time in its history
He was the oldest person to qualify for the individual classic of the World Cross-Country Skiing Championships scheduled for this Wednesday afternoon on the slopes of Trondheim (Norway). At the age of 61, Frederick Arthur Crosetto proudly wore Malta’s colours on the international stage.
Eighty-fourth and penultimate on his arrival, the Maltese was particularly impressed by his country’s first participation in an event of this scale. “We tried to put together a team. I was called by the federation and they asked me if I was up for it! I’m very grateful for the work the staff have done,” he told Eurosport. I was with my coach, who pushed me over the last few days to get me up to a good level.

Also questioned after the race about his motivation for taking part in this event, the founder and managing director of AMMEX, a global distributor of disposable gloves and personal protective equipment, preferred to respond with irony. I did this race because I think I suffer from a psychological problem and I told myself that I had to try different things in my life,” he laughed. That’s why I started here [Laughs]!
And even though he logically failed to qualify for the individual classic, which takes place on 4 March, Frederick Arthur Crosetto was relishing his time on the 7.5 kilometre track at the Granåsen stadium : “It’s just great to be able to represent the smaller nations here. It’s a really incredible experience. I’m older, so I think I should get a time count for my age,” he added with a smile.
