There was a steady stream of retirements from the Tour de Ski on Saturday 4 January. AfterEmil Danielsson ‘s withdrawal announced early this morning, those of Niilo Moilanen, Even Northug and Germany’s Katherine Sauerbrey were also revealed just minutes before the cross-country skiing world cup skiathlon in Val di Fiemme (Italy).

But they are not the only ones to have put the arrow in the Dolomites. After Léna Quintin and Mélissa Gal pulled out after the classic sprint, it was another French rider who put his foot down before the last two races of the tour. In the top 20 of the overall ranking, Rémi Bourdin will not be taking part in the start after feeling the first signs of the illness that has been plaguing the world caravan for the last few days.
There are now only two Frenchmen left to defend their colours. Still in the hunt for the overall title, Hugo Lapalus and Mathis Desloges still have a great card to play this Saturday.
