From 26 February to 9 March, the World Cross-Country Skiing Championships will be held in Trondheim, Norway. The event is eagerly awaited by an entire country, which has already been snapping up tickets for several weeks. However, there is a threat hanging over the event.

People Against Fossil Power, an organisation advocating the end of the fossil fuel era, is planning to block the men’s 50km race scheduled for 8 March. If the organisers do not accept the demands of their environmental campaign, the activists are promising to carry out punitive actions on the race site.
The spokespersons for this association have made a number of demands of the organisation: it must remove all visible logos and advertising for fossil fuel companies during the entire competition. Otherwise, the environmental association says it is ready to “disrupt the world championships on 8 March in an open and peaceful manner”.

With Equinor being Norway’s largest energy company and the main sponsor of the Trondheim World Championships, the situation is bound to be the subject of debate in the Nordic kingdom.
That’s why security officer Gaute Karlsson responded toAftenposten ‘s microphone by announcing that the event’s organising company was prepared to organise and offer people opposed to fossil fuels an alternative site in Granåsen (Norway): “Everyone’s wishes will be assessed internally, before the start of the championships”, he confided.
