Emma Ribom’s cross-country skiing world championships didn’t get off to the best of starts on 27 February. In the sprint skate in Trondheim (Norway), the Swede had a truly miserable time. Seventeenth and eliminated from the quarter-finals, the 27-year-old cross-country skater even gave herself a fright in this event.

Indeed, during this competition, the Scandinavian saw her pulse become abnormally high: “I’ve had a difficult few days recently. I’ve had a hard time recovering. I was really scared”, she told Viaplay after Sunday’s skiathlon, where she came back to her best by finishing eleventh.

For his part, national team doctor Rickard Noberius was reassuring after the many tests the young woman underwent. We’ve spoken to arrhythmia specialists and it’s not something we think is dangerous,” he said. But of course it scares you when the situation worsens, as it did in the sprint.
