Cross-country skiing: Gina Del Rio, happy semi-finalist
This Thursday, during the women’s free sprint at the World Cross-Country Skiing Championships in Trondheim (Norway), Gina Del Rio from Andorra had a magnificent tournament. Sixth in the qualifying round for her very first senior world championships, the native of the Pyrenees went on to reach the semi-finals.
She came out at this stage of the competition in tenth place, the second best result in Andorra’s history in the competition two years afterIrineu Esteve Altimiras‘ seventh place in the individual skate in Planica (Slovenia).

“It’s a super positive result, even better than I could have expected, she went on to explain in a statement from the Andorran Ski Federation. I’m really happy with the way it felt, with the whole team and with the way the race went in general. I had a great time, I was in good shape and the piste was quite hard, which is what I like. In the semi-final, unfortunately, it was softer and harder to ski. Despite everything, I’m very happy to have reached the semi-finals.”
Xabier Del Val, the head of Andorran cross-country skiing, described it as an “incredible day”. “To come away from this race with a top 10 is something incredible that surprises us, he says. So we’re really pleased to have started the Worlds in this way.”
