The fifth stage of the cross-country skiing world cup in Val di Fiemme, Italy, kicked off on Friday on the track of the forthcoming Olympic Games in Milan/Cortina (Italy). And it was a classic sprint that served as the fifth stage of the nineteenth edition of the Tour de Ski.

As the rain of forfeits continued to pour down on the whole caravan, only forty-two female cross-country skiers took part in the qualifying round. Wearing the silver bib, Jasmi Joensuu made this first round a formality.

Winning by more than two seconds from Italy’s Nicole Monsorno, the Finn took advantage to extend her lead in the tour’s points classification. While her team-mate Johanna Matintalo rounded off the top three, France’s Mélissa Gal, in twentieth place, and Léna Quintin, in twenty-seventh, will also see out the quarter-finals. In the end, Léonie Perry was unable to start due to a stomach ache.
