16:14. As with Ida Marie Hagen in the women’s race earlier in the afternoon, there was no suspense in the men’s compact race in Otepää (Estonia) on Sunday 11 January. Starting on the skis of Japan’s Ryota Yamamoto, the yellow numbered Johannes Lamparter took the lead after 2.5 of the 8 km of the cross-country race.

His lead over the chasing pack grew steadily: 21 seconds at the halfway stage, 33 after 6km and finally 21 at the finish. “I tried to keep a high pace and ski as fast as I could to maintain my lead lap after lap. On the last lap, I was beyond my limits and I could feel that things were coming back quickly. It’s a very good result to round off the weekend,” he said at the finish. He now hasa 150-point lead in the overall standings over Germany’s Julian Schmid, who struggled to 12th place on Sunday.
Only one Frenchman in the points, none in the top 30
The real interest of the race lay in the tactical race led by the group of eight chasers. This group waited until 1.5 km from the line to start explaining themselves, led by Germany’s Vinzenz Geiger. He eventually finished third on the line, ahead of his compatriot Johannes Rydzek. Jens Luraas Oftebro made a great comeback on the last lap to take fourth place despite his number 25.

Initially in a second chasing group, Marco Heinis dropped back halfway through the race. Despite this, he finished as the best Frenchman in 32nd place (+1 min 25). Mattéo Baud was 41st (+2 min 09), Edgar Vallet 46th (+2 min 24) and Maël Tyrode 47th (+2 min 34). Laurent Muhlethaler dropped out halfway through the race, having been ranked 52nd out of 55 after 3km. He suffered a hand injury during the winter break and had a complicated weekend.
