Nordic Skiing : a model to follow
The Olympic fever that swept through the tricolored land for over a month ended last week. A period awaited by many, criticized by others, which ultimately pleased most. But there is no room for nostalgia, especially for the Nordic skiing actors who will now focus on organizing the Winter Games in 2030.
Accepted under certain conditions, the candidacy of the French Alps is expected to take a new turn with the appointment of Michel Barnier. The new Prime Minister will be able to sign the letter of guarantee that must be sent to the IOC before the end of the year. The resident of Matignon had already been involved in a Winter Olympics, it was in 1992 for the Albertville Games.
It remains to be seen in which direction the members of the organizing committee, who will be chosen shortly, will head. According to information from Le Parisien, Laurent Wauquiez and Renaud Muselier originally wanted “to organize the Games with a different model than 2024”. However, given the Parisian success, continuity might be a good solution.
“The quality of the Dijop (Interministerial Delegation for the Olympic and Paralympic Games), with this cross-cutting administration, a true transmission belt, must continue to support the preparation for the 2023 Games,” assures Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, the Minister of Sports, in the columns of our colleagues.
But the latter also believes that these Olympics must have very specific missions: “For 2030, we will need to imagine new measures to take children to winter camps. This is also what the stakeholders of the mountains expect from us. It is essential that everyone continues to work together.”
Martin Fourcade at the center of the project?
The French Alps need a leader and inevitably, Martin Fourcade’s name looms over these Olympic Games. The Catalan could follow in the footsteps of Tony Estanguet to continue to build the connection between the two events. But for now, the former biathlon boss is giving himself some time to reflect.
“I need to complete the commitments I have made before I can plan for what comes next, whether it is within or outside the Organizing Committee […] I think I will be able to plan by the end of the year,” declared Martin Fourcade in the pages of Le Figaro recently. One thing is certain, the ball is in the court of the former biathlete.
