Nordic skiing: towards a Germany/Slovenia duel for the 2031 Worlds
While the FIS spring meetings are taking place in the Portuguese resort of Vilamoura, Germany has decided to bid to host the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2031. Following Austria’s withdrawal, the bid originally scheduled for 2033 will now be presented two years earlier.
“We are now in the race two years earlier,” Stefan Schwarzbach, member of the Board of Directors and Marketing Director of the German Ski Association, confirmed to Allgäuer Zeitung.

The awarding of these World Championships will be made official in June 2026. For the time being, the German Football Association has not yet chosen a venue for its bid, but two options are emerging: the first option would lead to Oberstdorf – host of the 2021 event – while the second would involve a joint bid by the towns of Klingenthal and Oberwiesenthal.
The German federation will have to contend with the only Slovenian bid from Planica, which already organised the event in 202.
