French Alps 2030: the same chairman of the coordination committee as for Paris 2024
In a press release on Tuesday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced the appointment of Belgian Pierre-Olivier Beckers as Chairman of the Coordination Commission for the 2030 French Alps Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Already occupying this role for Paris 2024, the former president of the Belgian Interfederal Olympic Committee (COIB) was appointed in particular thanks to his “in-depth knowledge of French governance and the French sports system”. “He has established excellent relations with the French authorities at all levels, with sports organisations, in particular the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF), and with society as a whole,” it says.
The “ideal person” according to Thomas Bach
The appointment was welcomed by IOC boss Thomas Bach, who described him as an “ideal person” : “Pierre-Olivier Beckers’ knowledge, insight and leadership qualities will be invaluable for the 2030 French Alps Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games,” he also explained.
Finally, on the occasion of this communication, the IOC reacted for the first time to the signature by Matignon of the French government’s financial guarantee. “It will enable planning and preparations to move forward just over five years before the Games, and will support the French partners in forming the Organising Committee in good time. Once the Organising Committee has been established, the other members of the Coordination Commission will be appointed,” it says.
