Para biathlon: Anthony Chalençon and Florian Michelon just off the podium
On Sunday afternoon, the individual event at the Para Biathlon World Championships in Pokljuka (Slovenia) got off to an ideal start for the visually impaired Anthony Chalençon. Guided on the track by Florian Michelon, he scored 10/10 on the mats. Halfway through the race, he was in second place.
However, the gap to his rivals was not huge and the slightest mistake, which costs a 1 minute penalty in this format, was going to be paid for in cash. And it was the Morzinois who cracked on his third shot. Missing two targets, Anthony Chalençon, the reigning world champion in the individual event, saw his medal hopes dashed.

Finally scoring 17/20 after a final 4/5, he finished fourth, 2 min 22 sec 1 behind the leader. Up front, Ukraine scored a hat-trick and it was the immovable Oleksandr Kazik (guided by Serhii Kucheriavyi) who won the gold medal.

He came out more than 10 seconds from the lead on the last firing point and won by a margin of 2.9 seconds over Iaroslav Reshetynskyi (guided by Dmytro Drahun) and 10.3 seconds over Anatolii Kovalevskyi (guided by Oleksandr Mukshyn).

The women’s individual was dominated by Germany’s Johanna Recktenwald (coached by Emily Rose Weiss). With 20/20, she managed to knock off her compatriot Leonie Maria Walter (guided by Christian Krasman), silvered at 18/20 and 22 sec 9. Austria’s Carina Edlinger (guided by Michael Seyss-Inquart), also with 18/20, was bronzed at 23 sec 9.
